James Scott Nelson
James Scott Nelson, 62, of Moscow, Kansas passed away Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Pioneer Manor in Hugoton, Kansas after a long-fought battle with cancer.
Jim was born August 25, 1954 in Holdrege, Nebraska to LaWarren W. and Verla (Tillotson) Nelson. He grew up in Holdrege and graduated with the class of 1972. Jim was baptized at Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege.
As a young boy, Jim demonstrated an exceptional talent for baseball and many other sports. His family spent many a summer night on the bleachers watching Jim play baseball mostly in the catcher position.
He was well liked by young and old. Jim never knew a stranger and had an exceptional memory of his
Holdrege friends and family long after he moved away.
Later in life, Jim participated and traveled to dog shows with his family in California and Texas.
Jim pursued the trade of welding and worked in that position in Oklahoma, San Diego, California, and Beaumont, Texas over the years. For the last many years he worked at Great Plains Gas Compression in Hugoton, Kansas until his health began to fail. He was fondly called “Welder Man” by co-workers and all who knew him in Hugoton.
Jim had an appreciation for all things agricultural related and enjoyed tinkering on his classic tractor while listening to his favorite country music.
Those left to mourn his passing are daughters Amanda (Keith) Swearingen of Darlington, Maryland; Tasha (Pete)Silva of Hugoton, KS and Crystal Doyle of Austin, TX and several grandchildren. His mother, Verla Taylor of Dodge City, KS and stepmother, Carolyn Reddish of Holdrege. Sisters Janet K. Blauvelt and fiancé, Duane Devitt of Hastings, NE;Joyce Bullock of Lincoln, NE; and stepsisters Virginia Moonand Naomi (Jerry) Warner both of Omaha, NE. Brothers Mark (Delana) Taylor of Dodge City, KS; Mike Taylor of Benton, Arkansas; Matt (Melissa) Taylor of Hugoton, KS and Monty (Shelly) Taylor of Blairsville, GA. Many other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and cherished friends, especially Rigo Bustillos and Blaine Grogan.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, LaWarren Nelson; stepfather, Maynard (Doc) Taylor; and brother-in-law, Terry Blauvelt, nephew, Clayton Taylor.
Celebration of Life Services will be Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 5PM at Paul’s-Robson Funeral Home at private family viewing will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday for the immediate family and a few close friends.
