Joan Joye (Brinkmeyer) Schweer

July 1, 1943 — April 13, 2025

Garden City, KS

Joan Joye (Brinkmeyer) Schweer, a spirited soul who touched the lives of many, peacefully departed this world on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at Shepherd's Center in Cimarron, Kansas. Born on July 1, 1943, in Hutchinson, Kansas, she was a beloved daughter to Charles and Joye (Smith) Brinkmeyer.

Joan met the love of her life, Vernon Schweer, at her very first Happy Hustlers 4-H club meeting when she was just 13—it was love at first sight. They bonded over their shared passion for showing livestock and participating in the 4-H clothing revue. Their love story continued as they were married on August 12, 1962, at the Garden City Lutheran Church.

A devoted mother, Joan is survived by her daughters, Sonya Joan Roberts and her husband, Rickey, and Sara Suzan Gleason, along with her son, Matthew Samuel Schweer. She took immense joy in her role as a grandmother, leaving behind seven grandchildren; Bryce Roberts (Haley), SaRae Graves (Joe), Landon Roberts, Bryleigh Schweer, Caden Schweer, Grady Gleason, Grayson Gleason, and one great-granddaughter, Raleigh Graves, who will forever carry her legacy in their hearts. Joan also leaves behind her loving sisters, Juanita Regehr, and Charlene Neill.

Despite the heartbreaking loss of her son, Vernon Raymond Schweer II, Joan’s spirit stayed strong. She continued to share love and resilience with those around her. Her life was a beautiful blend of family, friendship, and service to her community.

Joan was an active member of the Lutheran church communities in both Garden City and Olsburg. With a natural talent for numbers, she began her career as a bookkeeper at Lewis, Hooper and Dick, later working for several years with Winger Cattle Company. After she and Vernon moved to Olsburg, Joan became an enrolled agent and built lasting relationships with many clients over the years. Together with Vernon and their children, she raised sheep and was a dedicated supporter of 4-H and FFA members and their families.

In honor of her enduring spirit, a memorial has been established for the Joan Schweer Memorial, benefiting Finney County 4-H and Garden City High School FFA. Those wishing to contribute can send memorials to Robson Funeral Home, 620 N. Main Street, Garden City, Kansas 67846.
