Richard Orval Russell, age 83, passed away on February 17, 2025, at St. Anthony's Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado. He was born on December 24, 1941, in Logan County, rural Scott County, Kansas, to Orval Eugene Russell and Lena Rachel (Farr) Russell.
After graduating from Scott City High School, he went on to Hays, Kansas, and earned his Bachelor's Degree at Fort Hays College.
He grew up loving horses and spent a lot of time riding and attending rodeos.
After college, he was drafted; He spent the years of 1966-1968 at the Army Corps of Engineers where he surveyed land and punched cards to feed into the mainframe computers for topographical maps.
After getting out of the army, he did mountain surveying in Colorado for a ski lift, he worked at various feedlots and the Experiment Station in Garden City. When he retired at age 67, he had been a loyal employee with Cargill for 25 years.
Richard married Patricia Krenshaw in 1965 and had two sons, Philip and Todd. They later divorced in 1981. In 1983, he married Carol Jennings. From this union, they had two daughters, Brenda and Jennifer.
When he wasn't fixing things around the house, he enjoyed spending his time working in his vegetable garden, especially his tomatoes, and fishing at the Scott County Lake.
Richard leaves to mourn his passing his wife Carol, of almost 42 years,; two sons, Philip and wife Carla; Todd and wife Clarissa; a daughter, Brenda and husband Dwight; and fourteen grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Jennifer, and a grandson, Jacob.
In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made payable to Carol Russell, in the care of Robson Funeral Home, 620 N. Main Street, Garden City, Kansas 67846.
Book signing hours will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025, from 10 A.M. until 5 P.M. at Robson Funeral Home, Garden City, Kansas.
The memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 2 P.M. at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas. The family requests that those attending the memorial service please dress in casual wear.
